Real Men Take Care of Their Cars and Their Skin

men's health

June is Men’s Health Month

June is National Men’s Health Month. A recent study has been conducted that ascertains that men remember more about their first car than they can recall the last time they had a doctor’s appointment or really thought about their skin care. With busy schedules, men often think that taking care of your skin tends to be something women obsess about and they’d rather take out the trash. However, men, your skin is just as important as your vehicles, electronics, pets, and even helps your relationships. All you need is someone to teach you the proper way to take care of your skin. Georgia Dermatology Center is here to help everyone figure out the proper skincare techniques!

Quite often, a lack of skin care simply boils down to the fact that men can be intimidated by the large array of products available and don’t know what to choose. Or, men don’t think about skin care because they feel they have more important things to do. At Georgia Dermatology Center, we recommend that taking care of your skin should be a priority. Because there are so many different products available in the retail market, it is important to first know your skin type and then choose the products best suited to your unique conditions. Our experts at Georgia Dermatology Center can help you figure out your skin type, complexion issues, help you establish a daily skincare regimen, and provide suggestions of which products to use!

Why Do Men Need to Take Care of their Skin, Too?

In order for your skin to be healthy and look better, it needs to be moisturized and properly cared for. Because men are less likely to keep an eye on their skin, they are more likely to develop advanced melanomas requiring radical treatment without even being aware of the symptoms. Statistics indicate that 50% of the current annual melanoma deaths in the US are 50+ year old, white men. Even though looking “mature” does not carry the same social stigma for men as it seems to for women, why would you want to pass up looking youthful? Other benefits are:

  • Looking great makes everyone feel better, so adopting a simple, consistent skin care regimen will help your self-esteem improve drastically.
  • Women tend to gravitate toward men that exude the look that they take care of themselves. So, if in the relationship market or whether already involved – taking care of your skin can improve romantic possibilities!
  • Most importantly, caring for your skin now can help protect you from, and prevent skin cancer or other serious skin conditions later on in life.

What Simple Skin Care Regimen Works for Most Men?

Our Medical Spa estheticians will outline a simple daily skin care regimen as the place to start.

  • You should wash your face every morning and night with a fragrance-free, water-soluble cleanser.
  • Follow the cleanser with a toner to help clean out your pores and cut excess oil.
  • Exfoliate before shaving, not after. This reduces bumps and breakouts, and should be performed once or twice a week.
  • When you start shaving, make sure you have plenty of time. A few extra minutes can make the difference to avoid a razor rash or cutting yourself. Use a lather of shaving cream applied by a brush to get the closest, smoothest shave.
  • Also, make sure to use fragrance and irritant-free shaving cream and after-shave.
  • When you shave, shave with the grain with short, level strokes. Many people think that shaving against the grain is the best technique because it gives you the smoothest shave possible; however, it increases your chances for nasty ingrown hairs.
  • After shaving make sure to apply a moisturizer to your face and neck. You should also use a moisturizer each morning and night so your face does not get dried out. A moisturizer containing sunscreen or a separate product sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 is important to apply every morning to protect you from those harmful UV rays!

The Sun is your Enemy!

Tanning is bad for you and a golden “glow” is actually a reflection of skin damage! UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun cause your skin to wrinkle and sag because it destroys your skin’s elastin. Skin that is mistreated doesn’t look good forever – the more the sun exposure – the more likely age spots, deep wrinkles, jowls, and a sagging jaw-line will develop when as one ages. If appealing to your vanity isn’t enough, it has been found that UV exposure causes cellular damage to your DNA. This in turn causes your body to produce enzymes to repair the cells. If there is more sun damage than your body can repair, cells may begin to mutate, which leads to skin cancer and melanoma.

Dr. Gross maintains that wearing sunscreen is a long-term investment. Obviously it is preferable as one ages that people think you are 10 years younger than 10 years older than you are! Prevention and protection from the sun’s damage can make the difference. If a golden tan is your end-all, a self-tanner and spray-on tans are a better option than premature aging and increased risk for a variety of skin cancer.

Men Go to our Medical Spa, Too!

If you’re looking for a professional to help keep your skin in top shape, visit our Medical Spa in Cumming, GA today! Many men think that they are too macho and manly to actively care for their skin; however, lots of men are doing it. Think of it as a workout for your skin! We offer facials and peels, microdermabrasion, and even injectables to help men achieve a more youthful appearance. Facials and peels will help you to get rid of dead skin and lend clarity to your skin. Microdermabrasion does a great job of getting rid of dead cells by exfoliating the top layer of your skin, revealing smoother and healthier skin beneath. It also improves skin texture and minimizes pore size. Women are definitely attracted to a man who has good skin!

Also becoming increasingly more popular are muscle inhibitor injectables as well as facial fillers and natural fat transfer.  Many men think that these procedures are only for women; however, for a stronger jawline, reduced wrinkles, and a more rested appearance in general, these treatments, performed by Dr. Gross, should be considered. More and more men are coming into our office, located adjacent to Northside Hospital Forsyth and serving patients in Alpharetta, Cumming, Johns Creek, Roswell, Duluth and all of north Georgia, and asking for these services. So you don’t have to worry about being the only one! Many men view aging and wrinkles as being rugged looking, but who would pass up a chance to look younger? If you do, Georgia Dermatology Center is a perfect fit for you!
