Fat Transfer to the Face

At Georgia Dermatology Center we offer fat transfer as a facial filler option which plumps up facial features with a patient’s own fat. This procedure is intended to provide North Georgia patients with youthful facial fullness without enduring the long recovery period associated with traditional cosmetic surgery procedures like the facelift.

What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is technically referred to as autologous fat transplantation or micro-lipoinjection. During the fat transfer process, fat is removed from one area of your body via liposuction, usually the thighs, buttocks, or abdomen, and then transferred to the targeted area of your face to plump your lips, cheeks, chin, or under eye depressions. Fat transfer can also be used to lessen scars and diminish the look of fine wrinkles. It even helps to increase blood circulation by transferring a concentration of stem cells, so care is taken to extract the fat cells without damaging them to maintain the regenerative cells. The fat cells are then harvested by hand in order to preserve the cells. The healthy, concentrated fat cells are then injected into the area of your face that you wish to plump, fill, or rejuvenate. After a fat transfer, some of the injected fat cells will be absorbed by your body, although the majority of the fat cells remain permanently (although those cells will still continue to age with your face from that point forward). When the fat is harvested it is often possible to harvest a larger amount of fat than required for the procedure. Upon request to Georgia Dermatology Center, the remaining fat may be frozen and stored in vials for up to 2 years for future touchups as necessary.

When Will I See Results?

Results of the procedure may not be visible immediately due to swelling and bruising in the treated areas. You can also expect to feel tightness and soreness at the injection sites. Downtime is usually no more than a few days, and patients are typically able to return to work when the immediate bruising and swelling diminishes. Full recovery is usually achieved within one to two weeks, depending on the number of areas treated.

When performed properly, a large percentage of the injected fat cells will survive and remain, giving your face a rejuvenated look with more volume. As with any cosmetic procedure, speak to Dr. Alexander Gross and the staff at Georgia Dermatology Center about your expectations and the results you want to achieve so we can create a specific plan for your fat transfer procedure.
