For Skin That Looks Sweet, Avoid Sugar

It’s that most wonderful time of the year again, where holiday cookies, cups of hot chocolate, and pounds of fruit cake are consumed by all. But that overflow of sugar doesn’t just show up around our bellies. Consuming too much sugar can take a serious toll on your skin too. Healthy skin reflects a healthy diet, and according to Mayoclinic.com, eating foods rich in antioxidants will keep your skin in good condition. Too much sugar can cause your skin to look dull and add aging effects.

Including the proper amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet is essential to promote healthy, glowing skin. Fruits such as blueberries, lemons, and cranberries contain many anti-aging nutrients and vitamins. Vegetables like avocados, spinach, and sweet potatoes contain Vitamin E, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K, which help skin health. Fish rich in fatty acids like salmon, are great for skin’s appearance as well. Nuts and beans contain nutrients which help promote healthy skin as well as dairy products like yogurt, milk, and cheese.

Instead of pouring another glass of sugar-filled juice, or opening a can of soda, opt for water, green tea, or almond milk to wash down your holiday meals. Most people know that drinking eight glasses of water a day is recommended, however, many are unaware that a lack of water not only dehydrates your body but also your skin. Many studies have shown that green tea is said to help fight the aging process of skin. Almond milk contains no saturated fat or lactose and is a healthier alternative to that glass of eggnog some of us splurge on during the holidays.

Swapping sugary items out of your diet during the holidays can give you that holiday glow you wish for during this season. Here is a recipe for healthy hot chocolate, which is all-natural, dairy-free, and has no refined sugar. Give it a try using coconut milk.
